    Geese (and all the walking birds) on Ottawa bike paths have their own rules. Rule #1 for them is "We birds don't accommodate cyclists, they accommodate us". No bird has ever altered its behavior one bit regardless of whatever the cyclist does or tries. They will carry on and do what they do. If they are walking on the path, they will not stop or alter their course for any reason. If they are stopped on the path, they will not move for any reason. Their rule #2 is "We birds ain't squirrels. We own this place". Of course we know this, but we think "maybe it'll work just this one time".

      They are pretty famous for not caring at all what goes on around them. If you dig back into some of the early videos (May last year), I came upon a cyclist struck a goose that walked into their way. Geese just… don't care.

    One day the canal pathways will have no orange (barricades, warning/detour signs). We can only dream. Watching you zoom down that hill just before Vincent Massey Park 37:03 is almost as fun as doing it myself. Nice to see a path from Billings Bridge going north along Rideau River; just last week I was combing maps thinking it might be reasonably possible, but I see you used some dirt paths I didn't know were there. I did one of your exact routes (Park to Alexandra bridge to QC then Chief WC bridge back) a week ago, I'll probably do this one too.

    • @WTLeroux
      @WTLeroux 2 місяці тому

      One day! 🤣 There is a bike route on the west side of the Rideau, but it' poorly marked and dumps you onto the road, so I prefer the dirt path, even though it's bumpier and slower. I'm so very pleased to read you're trying my routes! If there's any direction you're curious about, let me know and I'll go explore - or point you to an earlier ride (there are a few!). 🖖🏻

    Here's one. Lowertown-Thornecliffe Park & Waterfalls-Aviation Pathway-Donald-Rideau River. Here's how: Take the path along Sussex going East, checkout the Rockcliffe Lookout which is on the way, continue on the pathway to the Space/Aviation museum. Stay on the pathway beside the Parkway, not the pathway at the river. Just at the eastern end of the museum buildings, to the south and across the parkway, there's a waterfall and a couple of ponds in front of it, very visible from the parkway and the pathway. Go towards the waterfall, cross the Parkway, and in front of the waterfall is a road, that at times may appear not too inviting, but it goes uphill, to the top of the falls to the fairly new Thornecliffe Park. Admire the view of Quebec from up there. Maybe not in spring, but the abandoned roads on the northeastern most part of the park used to be glorious, but the derecho, overgrowth, and roads in really bad repair kind of made it less so. (be sure to have tough tires, and extra hour, and a GPS if you brave them, but if you don't go back there, a regular bike is fine.). From the falls, go is a vague south then west direction (I get lost, so I'm not much help) and make your way to Hemlock as it crosses Aviation Parkway. Go under Aviation parkway (overpass) and turn left to get on Aviation Pathway thru the hilly woods heading south. You'll pass by Montreal Road. Continuing south on this pathway, you want to make your way to Donald, and you can use your favorite way to get there, but I've done this one 300 times: At la Cite Private (leading to the college), leave the main path by going west: Rainsford, (then immediately) Burn, Trojan going south, Dan, Claude going south, then east on Dora, South on Elaine to the end, and you are on Donald. Of course take Donald to the Rideau River where you can cross at Adawe crossing or just go north and back home. The whole trip: From Bordeleau Park, it's 7.6K to the waterfall. About 3-5 minutes to "climb" the steep road up to Thorncliffe. Then a confusing 1.1K to get to the Aviation Pathway, 3.3k to get to Donald/Elaine if you turn west at La Cite. Then 5.6K to get back to Bordeleau Park. Probably about 18km. If you need longer You can take an alternate route going East. You can, just before the airfield/museum, go down to the river at Birch. Go east, past the no longer visible museum and airfield (you'll see a Marina instead). At the marina, if you like, you can go up the hill and the back of the airfield is right there, a rare view, but then go back down again to the path. Continue east on this river pathway to Blair road boat launch. Then go back west 0.9km, there will be a sign for a nice winding path thru the woods to get to the museum, so turn south-west onto it and soon you'll be back at the Parkway and Museum. Then you can do your excursion to the waterfalls/Thorncliffe Park. That'll add 4.7Km. However, note that a visit to the waterfall and especially Thorncliffe will be more time consuming than you might plan for. Regarding entrances and exits from Thorncliffe: I know for sure that there's no problem in the summer to do this, and the edges of the Thorncliffe Park area certainly used to discourage this, but not anymore. Even though Google and my favorite map app seem to think there's no way to get to Thorncliffe from the museum, I assure you that I've done it at least three times and found no problem at all, other than the steep road, and of course, I tend to get lost finding my way to Hemlock. I took my suggested route (via the river) May 1, 2024, and the road uphill to Thorncliffe isn't the best for a street bike, but it was fine. Just south of the falls, finding my way to the end of Hemlock, there's a section of road missing, and there was a few dozers there, and obviously they are completely doing a section which meant taking my bike thru about 300 to 500m of soil, but I found it very flat by following a track made by a construction vehicle, but it may vary this year, and perhaps by a lot. It's still fine for a street bike if you are a little forgiving of some squishy parts. I finally had no problem finding the road connecting to the end of Hemlock though. From the (top of the) falls, I went as south as possible, then about 2/3 of the way to the first main road and civilization (very visible from this mess) I started going straight west where I could see a road in the distance beyond the dozer work. At Hemlock, there appears to be a fence/gate, but there's a narrow path to bypass it. I'll probably do it again, even before summer, and even considering there's dozers, because I usually cycle after 5pm, and weekends, and they are not around by then.

    Lovely footage. Great camera setup too. I love seeing these windows into the world. Very pleasant and relaxing. Even the sound of your wheels rolling over the dry tarmac, it brings back happy memories. In the UK most cycle-cam channels are about the bad behaviour observed and the relationships and tensions between different roadusers... and most are inner-city/London riders, which is stressful to watch. When I made a similar channel I focused on 'incidents' in Yorkshire, more than the quality enjoyable riding in between. I had a bad accident and now can't ride any more, but this is lovely to enjoy vicariously.

    Your camera shakes a lot. Put it on your chest instead of the handlebars. Thanks 👍

      I did try that early on and neither of the chest mounts worked reliably. I have been looking for a better mount to isolate the camera better, though.

      Found a firmware update that adds some stabilization option - tried that for tomorrow's video.

    1. Sorry to see Chapters moved out of the old Woolworth building. Yes, I've known they moved into the Rideau Centre for some months. It's just sad to see the signage gone now, too. 2. Yes, wise to brake for flying geese. I try to stay clear of geese generally.

    Incredible job with your videos. Use these as a virtual run on my home treadmill and makes the time just fly by. Keep up the great work!
